About the Webmaster
Who I am is not relevant, save for the fact that it helps the reader to understand Dr. Speth the way that I do. I am a forensic professional and in a different discipline, but college educated in biology and medicine, with over three decades of experience in forensic science. In dealing with Dr. Speth, I have noted, time and time again, that his peculiar habits were first encountered in the pages of Sherlock Holmes, and that I am relegated to the role of Dr. James Watson. Perhaps a more apropos comparison is television's Dr. Quincy (played by Jack Klugman), and Sam Fujiyama (played by Robert Ito).
To look at him now, I can only imagine what he was like in younger days. His hair is a brilliant white and his eyes are a warm brown, but his mind remains as keen as ever. I recall one occasion when he said that he sat in his chair for an entire afternoon, looking out the window, until he had finally figured out some niggling detail to his satisfaction, very much the same way that Watson described Holmes in his parlor. I very well imagine that Dr. Speth would leap up and shout, "Eureka!" (Greek, "I found it!), while pointing at the ceiling.
There are no short conversations with Dr. Speth, save perhaps the one time that he called me accidentally when his phone redialed the last number. That call lasted less than a minute, to my surprise. To date, our longest call lasted over three hours, and well past midnight. On that case, Dr. Speth did not hesitate to call me at all hours of the day or night, and on one occasion, at 1:30 AM, much to the chagrin of his wife. I may not sleep much, but even I need to rest. Dr. Speth, on the other hand, is a perpetual motion machine.
It isn't always roses and sunshine. At our most contentious times, I have come to appreciate the beauty of science. On one case, where we found ourselves on opposing views, we debated for hours about a blood stain in a photo. In the end, I finally won him over, not because stubbornness, but because of merit. We had dug down to the core of our opinions and, in doing so, emerged unified, and stronger in our opinions than when we started hours ago, the day before. While I cherish the victory, I certainly hope to never have to endure such a thing again.
Of his personality, I can say that he and his wife exemplify the best of old-fashioned sensibilities and charm, which might be one of the reasons why we get along so famously.
In the time that I've known Dr. Speth, I've found his principles to be unwavering, even if, at times, they were burdensome. Where many might have chosen to take the shorter and simpler path, he has always chosen to take the correct one, even if it was longer and more complicated. This has made me weary at times, despite being thirty years younger than him.
This website was created under the gracious permission of Dr. Speth, to whom I shall ever be grateful for providing inspiration and advice.
